Bedford's School Committee is weighing whether the high school track needs a fresh recoat or a full resurfacing as it plans facilities spending for fiscal 2028.

TOWN -- At the School Committee's August 17 planning session, Director of Maintenance Todd walked the board through capital projects at the middle-high school, including the running track. The track is now 20 years old and was last recoated in 2017, roughly the 10-year mark for that treatment. A new recoat, budgeted around $175,000, would be expected to extend the track's life another decade, but the district plans a September condition assessment first to determine whether a recoat is worthwhile or whether the track should instead be scheduled for full replacement sooner. Replacement cost estimates discussed at the meeting ranged from roughly $400,000 to $750,000 depending on scope, with officials also referencing settlement issues along the track's far side near Lane 7 and 8 that have required past repair work.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Bedford Youth Lacrosse is inviting members to walk in the Bedford Day Parade on Saturday, September 19. Participants are asked to meet at 10 a.m. on DeAngelo Drive, off Loomis Street, with the parade starting at 10:30 a.m. and ending at the Bedford Police Station. The organization says it will provide pom-poms, necklaces, cowbells and candy for adults to toss, and no RSVP is required. Bedford Youth Lacrosse also plans a Bedford Day booth offering free face painting, giveaways, gear for sale and registration information, including a Bedford Day discount.
