The Town of Bedford announced Oct. 22 that the Great Road Improvement Project is nearing completion, with several tasks remaining over the next several weeks.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, a striping crew will work overnight to install new crosswalks, bicycle lanes and roadway lane markings. The town asked drivers to use caution as they adjust to the new intersection layout.

Other remaining work includes sign installation, park lighting and placement of the final pavement course on the rail trail. Traffic signal mast arms are expected to arrive in mid-November. Once that equipment is delivered and installed, the new Fire Station emergency signal and the Hillside Avenue/Bacon Road/Great Road traffic signal will be activated.

The town said traffic analysis determined that dedicated left-turn lanes at the Bacon Road/Hillside Avenue and Great Road intersection were not necessary because of relatively low traffic volumes for those movements. The redesigned intersection will include updated traffic signals and a revised lane configuration intended to support efficient traffic flow while improving safety and accommodating the needs of all road users.
