Library Trustees · Meeting of January 20, 2026
Bedford Library Trustees reduced hours and defended director independence. The board voted unanimously to cut hours starting July 1, closing Mondays as the quietest night without reducing staff hours or state aid. Trustees also unanimously endorsed member Emily Prince to present at the January 21 Charter and Bylaw Review Committee meeting opposing a town manager hiring authority over the library director.
The dispute arose when the town sought to give the manager hiring and firing power over library, planning and health directors, then issued a new charter interpretation claiming the manager already held that power. Trustees disputed this interpretation, noting it contradicted their practice of director hiring and a prior 2019 amendment needed to give the manager power over the assessor.
