Bedford School Committee updates two policies, reviews $7 million in facility needs

School Committee · Meeting of August 17, 2026

Bedford School Committee previews $7 million in facility needs ahead of a November tax cap vote. Director of Maintenance Todd walked the board through roughly $2.7 million in rooftop HVAC replacements, a $175,000 track recoat versus $450,000 full replacement, and Riddlebrook's aging roof, now at $26 to $27 a square foot to repair. Superintendent Mike Cornier warned there will likely be "multiple iterations of the budget this year" given the tax cap question and a prior year in which cuts still weren't enough to pass.

The board unanimously adopted revised discipline policy JICJ and formatting changes to JICK, approved minutes and a consent agenda of student handbooks, and reworked its artificial-intelligence and screen-time strategic goals, including a review of the district's roughly $25,000-a-year School AI subscription. A homework survey of 1,070 high schoolers found 61 percent of parents rarely check Google Classroom and half of students report difficulty balancing homework with other commitments. Business Administrator Lisa Ambrosio said the district will credit taxpayers roughly $500,000 in unused HVAC bond interest at fiscal year's end.
