Bedford Disability Commission Seeks Formal Name Change

Bedford Disability Commission votes to seek formal name change to improve language standards. The Commission voted 5 to 0, with Select Board liaison Terrence Parker abstaining, to request the change from "Disability Commission" to "Commission on Disability," adopting terminology from the Massachusetts Office on Disability and implementing people-first language to reduce stigma. The Commission identified priority projects for the FY27 Municipal ADA Improvement Grant, including a $30,000 library website overhaul, high-contrast stair treads and flooring replacement at Town Hall, and proposed a closed-captioning pilot using tablets and laptops for the March Annual Town Meeting to assist attendees with hearing impairments.
